What you should know:

  • Click here to jump down to the glossary if you don't understand a term.
  • A pull-up is the most popular, but the wearer must take their clothes on and off to change them.
  • A diaper with tabs comes off without taking clothes off, and it fits more snugly.
  • If you're having trouble with absorbency, especially at night, make sure you have the right size, make sure it fits well, and make sure it has a high enough absorbency rating.
  • Always order the smallest size package at first (usually a pack) to make sure it works well before buying a larger amount, such as a case, which is cheaper per diaper.
  • Products not rated for bowel incontinence only provide coverage for slight bowel leakage at best.
  • Daytime = 10-16 fluid ounces of containment. Nighttime = 16 fluid ounces of containment or more. For a fluid ounce to cups to bladder size comparison chart, click here.

Not all products will deal with it. While the pull-on style is great because it is most like your normal underwear, the most popular style is the diaper with tabs when it comes to bowel or fecal incontinence.

Glossary (in Alphabetical Order)

First, for your convenience, while reading this glossary or these descriptions, click here if you want to see a conversion chart for cups to fluid ounces to bladder size.

Absorbency - This refers to the amount of liquid that an incontinence product holds. There is light (0-4 fluid ounces), moderate (4-10 oz), heavy (10-16 oz), and overnight (at least 16 oz). Click here for a fluid ounce to cups to bladder size comparison chart.

Adult Cloth Diapers - See reusable adult diapers

Adult Diaper - Millions of adults have incontinence due to things such as surgeries, Alzheimer's', pregnancy, and weakening of the bladder and bowels that sometimes, but not always, occurs with aging. Aging does not mean incontinence, but older people tend to have incontinence more than younger ones do. An adult diaper is a pull-up underwear product or diaper with tabs (brief), a product like a baby diaper, but it is for adults with incontinence. These products catch any liquid or bowel that a person loses uncontrollably or if they cannot get to the bathroom in time. There are many kinds of adult diapers, including reusable, green-friendly, washable products as well as disposable ones. Pull-ups are the most common, but diapers with tabs work just as well or sometimes better.

Incontinence Product - This is a larger category including adult diapers (see this glossary term) and also pads, belted undergarments, reusable underwear, and underpads. These products assist people with incontinence to live healthy, normal lives.

Adult Diaper Case or just 'Case' - Products come by the pack (usually around 10-12 products) or by the case (usually around 60-100 products). The case is cheaper per diaper but start with a pack if you have not ordered that product before.

Adult Diaper Cover - This is a reusable, washable cover that goes over the top of an incontinence product. It is used for added protection and peace of mind. It is made out of various materials depending on what type and absorbs excess fluids that leak out of an adult diaper.

Adult Diaper Pack or just 'Pack' - Most products come in a pack of around 10 and a case of around 60-100. The cases are less expensive per diaper. A 'pack' simply refers to the smaller quantity package.

Auto-Reorder - This is our reorder program, where we ship what you want in what interval you want to your door. It locks the price in for one year and is meant to be super convenient. Call us at 866-559-0353 or email us to sign up. You can also fill out the form on this page.

Booster Pad - This is like an incontinence pad except it is absorbent on both sides. It is used to beef up the absorbency of a pull-up or diaper with tabs (brief). Since it is absorbent on both sides (unlike a regular pad which is waterproof on one side), it absorbs the liquid and when it is at full capacity it passes the rest onto the incontinence product for absorption. It usually adds between 4 and 16 fluid ounces of absorbency. Click here for a fluid ounce to cups to bladder size conversion chart.

Bowel Incontinence - This is slightly up to the full uncontrollable loss of bowel control. There are specific products made for bowel incontinence, also called fecal incontinence. A product not labeled and made for this usually will only catch slight seepage at best. Some products work very well for this condition.

Diaper with Tabs - Also called a brief, the diaper with tabs is like a pull-up, except it has tabs or hooks on the side to fasten a tighter fit. You don't have to take your clothes off to take this product off. Almost all bowel incontinence products are diapers with tabs. Diapers with tabs can sometimes leak a little less because of the greater adjustment in fit.

Fecal Incontinence - see bowel incontinence

Heavy Needs / Heavy Incontinence / Daytime Incontinence - This refers to a product or need involving 10-16 fluid ounces, or up to a full bladder loss. Pull-ups and diapers with tabs work best for this. See this chart for a fluid ounce to bladder size to cups comparison.

Incontinence Pad - a pad, usually for light to moderate incontinence that catches urine (and sometimes bowel matter) and is shaped like a pad that goes in normal underwear or a reusable incontinence underwear product. These pads come in a wide range of absorbency options, and a few are even for heavy jobs. Most pads, though, just catch slight liquid loss due to problems such as stress incontinence or other types of slight urine loss.

Incontinence Underwear - This is a product that is made to look like regular underwear, which includes, depending on the product, lace, bows, etc., or for men they might look like boxers or have a functional fly. These products are usually for light to moderate urinary incontinence, and may or may not already have a pad sewn in. If they don't, they usually have a place to put a pad, and the product descriptions will tell you what type of disposable or reusable pad will work.

Light Needs/Light Incontinence - This refers to a product or need involving 0-4 fluid ounces of containment, often including pads and incontinence underwear. See this chart for a fluid ounce to bladder size to cups comparison.

Moderate Needs / Moderate Incontinence - This refers to a product or need involving 4 to 10 fluid ounces of containment, often including reusable underwear, sometimes pads, belted undergarments, pull-ups, and diapers with tabs (briefs). See this chart for a fluid ounce to bladder size to cups comparison.

Overnight Needs / Overnight Use / Overnight Incontinence - This refers to a product or need involving 16 fluid ounces or more of fluid, or at least one adult full bladder loss. These are overnight pull-ups and overnight diapers with tabs (briefs). See this chart for a fluid ounce to bladder size to cups comparison.

Pull-Up - A pull-up pulls on like normal underwear. As was said earlier in this article, you must take your clothes off to take them off. Many people like it because it doesn't seem as much as an adult diaper as a diaper with tabs. It is the most popular.

Reusable Adult Diapers - This is a diaper with tabs or covers up that is washable and dryable at least 200 times. Check the specific product to see how many times it can be washed and dried and what soap to use. These products are green-friendly and save a lot of money in the long run. See this article for why adult cloth diapers are better.

Reusable Products - This is a larger category of reusable products that includes adult cloth diapers and also reusable pads, booster pads, underpads, and chair pads. All products can be washed and dried many, many times. See the specific product for how many times. Once in a while, there are specific types of soaps that work best, but the product description will tell you if that is the case. These products save a ton of money in the long run over disposables.

Swim Diaper - This is a disposable or reusable product for bowel incontinence while in the pool. Many people with bowel incontinence have stopped swimming due to accidents, and these products get you back in the pool! One product, the SoSecure Swim Diaper, even absorbs slight urine leakage if you get the custom fit done right. Always test in the bathtub to make sure you are safe, and get yourself swimming again!

Underpad - These go over the bedding and protect the bedding. They are used at night only unless they are protecting a couch, chair, or car. If the incontinence product leaks, this product catches the excess and your bedding does not have to be washed or replaced. They for peace of mind. The disposable ones (disposable underpads) tend to bunch up a lot easier than the reusable ones (reusable underpads), and many of the reusables can be washed 200 times.

Urinary Incontinence Comments

question marksmall/medium was a perfect fit. Would small the new sizing be the same? The new medium was too high on the rise because I am short

the word responseThank you for your inquiry. Not sure exactly what product you are using. This is where the measurements come in. Measure your waist at the belly button and your hips at the widest point. Take these measurements and use them with the sizing chart for the product. This will help you get the proper fit. If you have any questions, please let me know. I would be happy to help.

question markWhat pull-ups would I order for waist size 56" thigh size 48"

the word responseThank you for your inquiry. Use the largest measurement to find the correct size. In this case, it would be the 56-inch waist. You would use that measurement to see what size you would need in each product. There are no sizing standards in the incontinence world. Each brand has its own. So check the product's sizing chart to determine the size you need.
