There are many ways you can support maintaining a healthy bladder, both through lifestyle and diet. Whether you are trying to regain control or preserve the health you already have, there’s a lot you can do.
LIFESTYLE Maintain a healthy weight to reduce strain on the bladder. Quit smoking to reduce irritation of your system. Exercise regularly to strengthen your body and the muscles supporting your organs. Keep a bladder diary if you are concerned about the frequency or other symptoms so that you can discuss them more carefully with your care provider.
DIET Limit alcohol and caffeine as the first line of defense. Pay attention to how other foods and beverages affect your system. Soda, coffee, aspartame, spicy foods, citrus, and tomatoes can all be problematic for some people. Try eliminating them one at a time to see how they are affecting you personally. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to hydrated but avoid overdoing it or guzzling large volumes in one sitting.
BE INTENTIONAL
Use the restroom frequently enough to keep the bladder flushed out. Relax while urinating and consciously empty the bladder completely each time. Avoid constipation and talk to your care provider about supplements or diet changes you may need to consider if this is a recurring problem.
