There are products available for this need, maybe just not available in your local stores. Most incontinence products available in your local stores are NOT for bowel incontinence. If you read the labels, you will find that they are rated for urinary incontinence only. If they do not mention bowel incontinence, they are not designed for this need.
Bowel incontinence products are designed specifically with the areas of containment in mind. The absorption is generally more concentrated in the area needed. Snug leg gathers around the leg openings are a must. This helps with containment.
Bowel incontinence comes in many different forms. It can be only seepage, loose stools, or firm stools. We have separated the bowel incontinence products for those who need help finding products.
For seepage, we have many who use the Tena for Men pad. While this product is designed for urinary incontinence, when turned around with the larger side towards the back, it will contain any seepage and eliminate those marks on your underwear. We discovered this while working with a customer and have been recommending it with great success since.
The Abri-San Special pad is great for the loose and firm stools. The pockets and ribs contain feces. It is designed to be worn with close-fitting underwear. The pad is large 14 x 28” and is designed to cover the entire backside. But the containment is there when needed. Some people do not need to cover all the time. They are aware of when the need for protection and this is an excellent product as it allows you to go more about your normal day. According to most nurses, though, you should
Relax, many medical conditions cause accidental bowel leakage. For full coverage diapers and brief types, there are a wide variety of products available in the brief with tabs style. In the pull-on style only three products are available - Tena Discreet Protective Underwear, Prevail Extra Protective Underwear and Prevail Super Plus Underwear. Many are also using the Incontinent Swim Underwear as an option. This product is designed for bowel incontinence while using a pool. But the containment is still there while wearing outside of the water.
While the pull-on style is very popular because it is most like your normal underwear, it does have its drawbacks. While they do have tear-away side seams to easy removal of soil product, you will still need to remove clothing from the waist down to replace it with the clean product, just like you are changing your normal underwear. For some, this is not an option.
The brief with tab style products allows you to remove the soiled product and replace it with the clean product without removing your clothing. However, they are “diaper” like. They have the tabs, but this allows you to change more easily.
The Tranquility brand brief with tab products for bowel incontinence is also for urinary incontinence. They have a very high capacity and excellent containment. They are also available in a slimline style that is more discreet.
Finding a product right for you and your needs can be difficult. Be honest with yourself about your needs. And remember to take your measurements of the waist at the belly button and the hips at the widest point. Apply the larger of the two to each product sizing chart to ensure ordering the proper size. With bowel incontinence, a snug fit is a must, however not a tight fit to the point of being uncomfortable.
