Cough
Also called tussis, a cough is a fast forced exhale of the lungs intended to pass from the body substances such as mucus. This action is usually involuntary but can be stimulated when needed. A cough originates in the lungs, as opposed to a sneeze which originates in the nose or sinuses.
Coughs are typically caused by an irritation of the lungs, often from a respiratory infection, asthma, smoking or other irritants in the air. Intended to remove unwanted material from the lungs, if the cause is not removed it can become chronic. An acute cough is defined as one lasting less than three weeks, and a chronic cough as one lasting longer.
A chronic cough is a symptom of another problem but can also cause other problems in and of itself. Stress incontinence has many causes, one of which is the chronic cough associated with smoking. In turn, coughing can result in too much pressure on weakened bladder muscles, resulting in incontinence.
