Bone

noun

Bone is the well known substance that makes up the skeletal system, having a high concentration of calcium salts. It is the structure that rigorously supports the muscular and tendon systems, as well as protects organs such as the heart, lungs and brain.

The human body contains 206 bones, collectively called the skeleton. Each hand and foot alone are made up of 19 bones, the vertebrae 26, the face 14, and the ribs 24.

Bones come in many shapes, from the head, shaft and neck of the femur to the hollow set of eight cranial bones which encircle the brain.

One of the most commonly known diseases, osteoporosis directly affects the bones. As it advances, the bones become porous and fragile, increasing the person’s risk of breaking one. The first symptom of osteoporosis, for some, is a bone fracture from an activity or injury that shouldn’t have resulted in one. It can go undetected for decades and can result in pain, disfigurement, and loss of quality of life. Some treatments are available.
