Angry

adjective

A state of anger, where a person’s emotions can be anywhere from a slight annoyance to an intense feeling towards someone, something or a situation.

Anger increases the activity of the central nervous system, much like a fight or flight response. The central nervous system becomes stimulated, releasing chemicals such as adrenaline, or as it’s medically known epinephrine, into the bloodstream. In medicine this is called a sympathetic response, which stimulates the heart rate and dilates the pupils.

The opposite response, called a parasympathetic response, decreases the heart rate and constricts the pupils.

Origins include the Latin word “angor” which means “anguish” and the Greek term “angst” meaning fear.

Anterior

adjective

Anterior means towards the front side of the body. The anterior portion of a lung, for instance, is the portion of the lung closest to the person’s chest.

Medical language uses many terms to precisely define where a body part or condition exists. The opposite is posterior.

“Ante” in Latin means “before.”
