Absorb
verb
Means to allow something to pass through or take something in, such as the skin or the intestines. Some medical treatments rely on absorption such as a dose of radiation, transmitted light, or the medications and vitamins we take each day.
Absorption is a very important process of feeding our body, it also can be harmful to our systems if the absorption is too much or toxic. Some bacteria and disease processes are spread through absorption and if the skin has a break from a cut or other injury, the skin barrier (our protection) has been compromised.
Our skin is one big important organ. It can be the portal to the body. Its function is to protect the body and keep out bacteria and other harmful agents while allowing healthy absorption of nutrients our body needs. A good example of healthy absorption is the sun. We need Vitamin D from the sun, but too much sun can damage the skin.
Other ways our body uses absorption is through the stomach and intestines. These organs absorb products from the foods and medicine we ingest. This absorption is then sent to the rest of the body for nutrients and medicinal needs.
From the Latin “absorbēre” which means “to swallow or suck in”
