Abnormal
adjective
Not normal.
In the medical world the Doctor is looking for abnormal findings. An abnormal finding is something that is not normal for that person. It is a deviation from the usual. It might pertain to the structure of the body, the position a person maintains their body while sitting or standing, the condition of the body, along with the persons behavior.
The doctors run many tests looking for abnormal findings when a patient has a complaint of not feeling well or maybe is just having an annual checkup. The earlier the problem is found, the better for the patient and the better the better the chances of a good outcome.
The medical doctor will check each system looking for abnormal findings. The skin may have an abnormal growth which would be checked for cancer or premalignant cancer. The bones maintain the structure of the body and if one of them are abnormal the doctor will be looking for a cause.
Other annual tests for abnormal findings would be pap smears, colonoscopies, blood tests, and EKG’s.
Derived from the root word “ab” which means “not” and the common term “normal” which is based on the Latin word “norm”
